The Norton Children’s Fund Commission of Andover, CT, Announces
two Scholarship Winners

The Norton Children’s Fund Commission is delighted to announce that the two $1,000 Chester D. Norton Scholarship winners for 2023 are Kyle Eckert and Hadley Marchand. We received many excellent applications from graduating high school seniors residing in Andover. We wish the applicants and the 2023 graduates all the best in their future endeavors.

The generous grant that the commission received from The Greater Together Andover Community Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving in the amount of $1,000 to be used specifically for funding a scholarship for a graduating Andover high school senior, allowed the commission to award two scholarships this year instead of just one scholarship.

Kyle Eckert will graduate from RHAM High School on June 15th. Kyle will study electrical engineering with a focus on audio technology at the University of Hartford in the fall of 2023 to pursue a career in audio electronics.  Kyle, who was in the Technology Student Association (TSA) for four years, and president in his senior year, won 1st place in music production and problem solving two years in a row and 3rd place in the third year of the TSA competition. Kyle dog sits and works up to 20 hours a week at the Dunkin Donuts in Hebron. Kyle has enjoyed skiing for the last 15 years, and was on the skiclub at both RHAM middle school and RHAM high school for five years.

Hadley Marchand will graduate from RHAM High School on June 15th.  Hadley will begin her studies at Endicott College in Massachusetts in the fall of 2023.  Hadley plans to pursue an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science/Pre-Professional Athletic Training followed by a Masters in Athletic Training to someday become an athletic trainer working for a professional sports team. She has played softball for RHAM Varsity Softball 2019-2023 (Captain 2022 and 2023) and will play softball for Endicott College.  Hadley was on the CT Bombers Travel Organization 2017-2023 and has received the CHSCA All Conference Award in 2021, 2022 & 2023 as well as the CHSCA All-State Class L First Team Award 2022 and 2023.

The Norton Children’s Fund was established when Chester D. Norton, an Andover farmer, died in 1891. Local legend has it that when Chester was a child his poor family could not afford the eyeglasses he needed and a kindly gentleman provided the family with funds for Chester’s eyeglasses. Many years later when making his will Chester remembered that single act of kindness and left an act of kindness of his own that continues to give to this very day.

Over the years the Commission has received donations to increase the principal from the original $3,000. Only the interest income and private donations are expended each year. Funds are used during the year for assistance with back-to-school items, holiday time assistance and yearly scholarship(s). The Commission depends greatly on the generosity of members of the community to help sustain services. Anyone wishing to donate to the Norton Children’s Fund may send a check to: Norton Commission, c/o Andover Town Office Building, 17 School Road, Andover, CT 06232.

Congratulations again to Kyle and Hadley!
