Learning about Vernal Pools

Hank Gruner tells you all you need to know!
Vernal pool
Event Date:
Wednesday, February 23, 2022 - 6:30pm to 8:00pm

Before the trees leaf out, before the grass is green, before we hear the red-winged blackbirds returning to the ponds, we hear the peepers calling from vernal pools -- wet spots in the woods that serve as nurseries for many species of amphibians.  Get a jump start on Spring by learning how to listen and look for the species that begin their life cycles in these ephemeral pools.

Hank Gruner, a herpetologist and Andover resident, will present a PowerPoint program introducing the dynamics of vernal pool life during this event.  Hank is also the co-author of the book, Conservation of Amphibians and Reptiles in Connecticut, which has recently been published by the Connecticut DEEP.

In addition, Hank will lead a field trip to visit vernal pools on town-owned land behind the soccer fields on one of two Saturdays in April -- either April 9th or April 16th (TBD).

This program will be held at the Andover Town Hall Community Room, 17 School Road, Andover.  All are invited to attend, and while an RSVP isn't necessary, we would still like to know if you plan to be there.  Please call the library:  860-742-7428.
