Applications for Andover Norton Children’s Fund Scholarship Available

Chairman of the Andover Norton Children’s Fund Commission, Betsy Houle, has announced that the Commission will once again be offering a scholarship to a deserving Andover high school senior to help finance their post high school education.

The Norton Children’s Fund was established when Chester D. Norton, an Andover farmer who died in 1891, specified in his will that $3,000 was to be left for the poor children of Andover. Local legend has it that when Chester was a child his poor family could not afford the eyeglasses he needed and a kindly gentleman provided the family with funds for Chester’s eyeglasses. Many years later when making his will Chester remembered that act of kindness and left an act of kindness of his own that continues giving to this very day.

Over the years the Commission has received donation to increase the principal from the original $3,000 to approximately $9,000 today. Only the interest income and private donations are expended each year. Funds are used during the year for assistance with back-to-school items, Holiday time assistance and a yearly scholarship. With today’s low interest rates and the high demand for services, the fund does not generate enough money to support all the needs for the children of Andover. The Commission depends greatly on the generosity from members of the community to help sustain services.

The Norton Commission Scholarship is offered to any and all high school students and is not based on financial need. In the recent past the scholarship has been in danger of not being offered because of a lack of funding. Thanks to the generous out pouring from the community there is now enough money in the fund to allow the Commission to offer the scholarship.

Scholarship application forms are available here, in the Town Clerk’s office at the Town Office Building, or at the Guidance Counselor’s office at RHAM high school. An application form may be requested by e-mail from the Norton Commission’s Secretary at Deardianne@comcast.net. The deadline for receiving completed scholarship application forms is Saturday, April 29, 2017. Completed applications should be sent to the Norton Commission, c/o Andover Town Office Building, 17 School Road, Andover, CT 06232.

The Norton Commission members will meet in early June to select the recipient of this year’s scholarship, and the allocation of funds for next year’s back-to-school needs.
